Resident Evil 2 Remake: Your remake questions answered

Last Updated January 3rd, 2019

In just a few short weeks, Resident Evil fans will finally get to play the long-awaited Resident Evil 2 remake. Unlike the previous Resident Evil remasters, the Resident Evil 2 remake has been entirely rebuilt from the ground up to the point where it looks and feels almost like an entirely new game.

But there’s still some questions fans have about the upcoming remake and we’ve answered some of those below.

Why is Resident Evil 2 such a big deal?

The original 1998 Resident Evil 2 is considered to be one of the, if not the, best Resident Evil games in the series’ history. However, as you might imagine, it hasn’t exactly aged very well in the two decades since its launch.

For a newer generation of gamers, Capcom decided that simply remastering the original wouldn’t be enough. With the remake, new fans and old fans alike can experience Resident Evil 2’s classic horror narrative with modern graphics and refined gameplay systems. Capcom has also injected a couple fresh surprises to keep fans of the original on their toes.

Which Resident Evil 2 characters are returning?

All of the key characters from the original are coming back for the remake. Players can once again control rookie cop Leon Scott Kennedy and college student-turned-survivor Claire Redfield as they explore a zombie-infested Raccoon City. Other familiar faces such as Ada Wong and Sherry Birkin are also set to return.

As for returning antagonists, players can expect run-ins with the terrifyingly imposing Tyrant and Sherry’s mutated father William Birkin. Lickers, zombies dogs, and, of course, standard zombies will also be returning. Capcom initially considered cutting the original game’s iconic giant alligator fight, but don’t worry, it’s still there in the remake.

Oh, and Capcom also hinted that characters like Hunk and even Tofu might be showing up so keep your eyes peeled.

Will Resident Evil 2 be in first-person?

Unlike Resident Evil 7, the Resident Evil 2 remake won’t be played from a first-person perspective. Instead, Capcom is going back to the over-the-shoulder third-person perspective which defined games like Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6. This will likely be a welcome change over the tank controls of the 1998 original.

Is Resident Evil 2 PS4 exclusive?

Xbox and PC fans can rest easy as the Resident Evil 2 remake is having a simultaneous launch on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. There are no timed exclusivity deals or other malarkey to deal with. Right from launch the remake can be played on both the Xbox One and PS4 consoles as well as PC.

Does Resident Evil 2 support VR?

The Resident Evil 2 remake sadly won’t support VR. Capcom’s Tsuyoshi Kanda and Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed as much during an interview with the Daily Star:

“We’re not thinking about VR support currently, given that the camera perspective and the over-the-shoulder choice would mean that VR is not the best way to present the game. VR doesn’t match the vision for us.”

If you want to take your Resident Evil adventures into the realm of VR, Resident Evil 7 will remain your only option for the time being.

Is Resident Evil 2 coming to Nintendo Switch?

Unfortunately, Capcom doesn’t have any current plans to release the Resident Evil 2 remake for the Nintendo Switch. However, an eventual Switch release shouldn’t be ruled out entirely. Capcom ported both Resident Evil Revelations games over to the Switch and it even released a cloud-based Switch version of Resident Evil 7 in Japan. If you’re holding out for a Switch port of the Resident Evil 2 remake, though, you might have a bit of a wait ahead of you.

Does Resident Evil 2 have multiplayer?

Given how Resident Evil 2 stars two separate protagonists, there’s certainly potential for co-op multiplayer at the least. However, the original version of Resident Evil 2 involved playing as each protagonist separately and Capcom is sticking with that setup for the remake.

Of course, there’s always the chance that Capcom could implement some sort of co-op side mode either as a hidden surprise in the base game or as DLC. After all, if the gameplay is being rebuilt from scratch, why not let players live their fantasy of kicking butt as Leon and Claire together?

Does Resident Evil 2 have any pre-order bonuses?

Indeed it does. All Resident Evil 2 remake pre-orders come with a pair of exclusive handgun skins based off of Chris Redfield’s and Jill Valentine’s Samurai Edge handguns. Digital PS4 pre-orders also come with a special Resident Evil 2 home menu theme.

There’s also a $70 Deluxe Edition for the Resident Evil 2 remake which comes packaged with some extra digital goodies.  Deluxe Edition buyers will have access to the following bonus items:

  • Albert Wesker Samurai Edge handgun skin
  • “Noir” costumes for both Leon and Claire
  • “Arklay Sheriff” costume for Leon
  • “Elza Walker” costume for Claire
  • “Military” costume for Claire
  • Retro soundtrack swap
