Resident Evil 2: How to find every hip pouch and max out inventory

In the Resident Evil 2 Remake there are a lot of resources you have to find in order to maximize your odds at survival, but any experienced player knows that the most valuable resource is inventory space.

Higher difficulties reduce that space, and you’ll need plenty of it to carry all your weapons, meds, and ammo. The only way to increase your maximum inventory capacity is to find the various Hip Pouches spread out across Raccoon City in Leon and Claire’s campaigns.

In short, inventory space is one of the most valuable resources in the game.  That’s why we put together this guide to finding every inventory upgrade in the game as either Claire or Leon.

Inventory Upgrades for Leon

West Offices Safe Hip Pouches

 Location: West Office Room safe

To get your hands on this inventory upgrade, make your way to the West Offices either via Reception and the Operations Room, or via the western blue spade door on the first floor of the main hall. This is one of the only Inventory Upgrades that can be found the same way as both Leon and Claire.

Once inside, make your way to the office in the back to find a safe behind the desk. The combination for the safe can be found in the STARS Office on the second floor, that said you don’t need to find the note to crack open the safe. The combination should be left 9, right 15, left 7, and works just like any annoying high school locker you’ve ever dealt with. Carefully rotate the dial to each number, and don’t be afraid to back out and start over if you turn the dial the wrong way, or accidentally pass the number you want. It’s important to remember to rotate the lock to the left first (counterclockwise), then the right (clockwise), then the left again to input the code properly. When you successfully dial in the right code, the safe will pop open, and reveal another set of hip pouches as your reward.

West Storage Room Hip Pouches

Location: On a table in the West Storage Room (3F)

This upgradeis a breeze compared to some of the others on this list, and can be found by making your way to the West Storage Room on the third floor of the police station, which you’ll do naturally to progress the story.

That said, the easiest way to find the West Storage Room is to make your way up the northwestern staircase near the Dark Room and Safety Deposit Room on the first floor.Once you arrive, you’ll find your prize sitting on a small table directly across from the iron bars and the C4 charge.

Simple!

Operator’s Room Hip Pouch

Location: Locker in the Operator’s Room in the Underground Facility

You’ll find this inventory upgrade just after killing the first boss in the underground facility. With the boss defeated, head up the ladder from the lower floor, and follow the hallway to the Operator’s Room with a typewriter and stash box.Check the lockers on the west side of the room and you’ll find another set of hip pouches hidden inside.

Safety Deposit Room Hip Pouches

Location: Locker 203 in the Safety Deposit Room

You’ll find this upgrade in locker 203, inside the Safety Deposit Room just north of the West Office. The only problem is that it’s sealed away in a locker that can only be accessed by inputting the locker number on the computer panel near the entrance to the room.

Unfortunately, the keypad is missing both the “2” and “3” keys, so you’ll need to find both if you want to open locker 203 and snag your prize. The first spare key can be found by making your way to the Shower Room on the second floor of the northwestern stairwell. As soon as you enter the part of the room where Steam normally blocks your path, look to the right, and you’ll find a small portable safe with a set of instructions sitting on a pile of towels in the corner.

Examine the portable safe and carefully use guess and check to solve the light puzzle (a pen and paper might be helpful if you’re having trouble). Inside the safe you’ll find your first keycap. The second spare key can’t be found until after you’ve made your way down into the parking garage and looted the red diamond key from the Morgue. With the red diamond key in hand, you’re free to make your way to the Linen Room on the southwestern side of the second story of the police station. Carefully sneak by the licker patrolling the hallways, (or kill it if you’d prefer) and use the red diamond key to unlock the door. Inside you’ll find yet another spare key locked inside a portable safe.Solve the puzzle and return to the Safety Deposit Room on the first floor of the police station with the two key caps.

Insert both keys into the broken panel, and then input “203” as the code to finally claim another set of hip pouches as your prize.

Workroom Hip Pouches

Location: Workroom in the upper section of the Sewers

This set of Hip Pouches is a little tricky to find, purely because of its location in the Workroom in the Sewers.

The only way to access the Workroom is after getting your hands on the T-shaped tool from the Cable Car Platform to open gates in the sewers.

Once you have the T shaped tool, make your way down the stairs on the east side of the Treatment Pool Room. Head down to the lower Sewers and make your way through the Lower Waterway to the west until you find the raised platform of the Workroom Lift.Use the T shaped tool to open the gate, and then use the lift to enter the Workroom itself. Once inside, you’ll find your fancy new Hip Pouches on a shop table on the north side of the room.

Nap Room Hip Pouch

Location: Nap Room

This final inventory upgrade can’t be found until nearly the end of Leon’s campaign, when you get your hands on the Signal Modulator that allows you to restore power to small sections of the lab with the correct frequency. To that end, to get the Nap Room Hip Pouch make your way to the reception area near the cable car and head into the more civilian focused portion of the lab to the west. Ignore the Cafeteria and Kitchen, and head straight for the Nap Room at the end of the hall.

Inside, you’ll find an electrical panel with “MUF” on the display panel. Open your inventory, and examine your signal modulator, then adjust the signal to “MUF” and align the wavelengths to match the new setting.Once that’s done, interact with panel, and put the Signal Modulator in place to restore power to the room. The small sleeping cubicles should open, allowing you to pick up the Hip Pouch and your final inventory upgrade from the bed on the far left.

Claire’s Inventory Upgrades

Main Hall Hip Pouches

Location: Sitting on the front desk in the Main Hall

This first set of Hip Pouches can be claimed as soon as you gain access to the Main Hall as Claire. These will probably be the first set of Hip Pouches you find, and it’s important to grab it quickly to cut down on how much you need to backtrack with supplies and key items. To find this inventory upgrade, just swing down to the front desk on the south side of the Main Hall, and you’ll find the Hip Pouches waiting for you where Leon normally has a stash box and a save typewriter.

West Office Hip Pouch

Location: Combination Safe in the West Office

This Hip Pouch can be found the same way in Claire’s campaign as in Leon’s, so for a more detailed explanation check the West Office section in Leon’s portion of this guide.

Otherwise, make your way to the West Office via the blue diamond door on the first floor of the Main Hall. Check behind the desk in the back office to find the safe proper.

The combination to the safe should be left 9, right 15, left 7. If you’re having trouble, take it slow, and remember that left is counterclockwise, and right is clockwise. With a little luck the safe should pop open, and reveal another set of Hip Pouches to expand your inventory.

Operators Room Hip Pouch

Location: Locker in the Operators Room after defeating the first boss

This is one of the Inventory Upgrades that can be found the same way as both Leon and Claire, so if you want a more detailed explanation, check Leon’s section of this guide.

Otherwise, you’ll find this Hip Pouch in a locker in the Operators Room after defeating the first boss in the Machinery Room. Once the boss is defeated, head up the ladder in the Machinery Room and follow the path until you find a room with a typewriter and a stash.

Check the locker nearby and the Operator’s Room Hip Pouch is yours.

Safety Deposit Room Hip Pouch

Location: Locker 203 in the Safety Deposit Room

Just like with Leon, you won’t be able to get your hands on this inventory upgrade until after you find the two missing spare key caps for the small terminal just inside the Safety Deposit Room.

Unfortunately, with Claire you can’t get your hands on either of the keys until you get access to the Police Chief’s Office, and collect the red heart key.

With red heart key in hand, you need to make your way to two locations. The first is the Interrogation Room, which can be accessed by going down the stairs outside the chief’s office. Follow the hallway at the base of the stairs to the red heart door at the end of the hall.

Search the room, then approach the mirror on the other side of the room to trigger an appearance of the Tyrant. Do a few loops to lose him, and then return to the Interrogation Room and hop through the broken mirror to the Observation Room on the other side.

Search the room, and you’ll find a small portable safe. Take some time to work your way through the combination and you’ll receive the first missing key cap as a reward.

Our next stop is in the Linen Room on the second floor of the police station.  Make your way through the Library and the Lounge, then use the red diamond key to access the Linen Room on your right.Search the room to find yet another portable safe, which when cracked, rewards you with the second missing key cap.

As you might expect, our next stop is the Safety Deposit Room on the first floor. Cut through the West Office and then across the hall to the door of the Safety Deposit Room.

Inside, access the broken panel and replace the keys with the blank ones from the portable safes. You can insert a variety of numbers to loot all the lockers at this point, but you’ll want to input “203” to unlock the locker with the hip pouch. With the locker unlocked, you can claim this useful inventory upgrade as your own.

Workroom Hip Pouch

Location: Middle level Sewer, on a table in the Workroom

The next inventory upgrade on our list can be found once you make it to the Sewer in Claire’s campaign. You’ll find your first stash and save typewriter in the Monitor Room. From there, head out to the Cable Car Platform to find the T shaped tool on a small table at the end of the catwalk.

Head back to the Treatment Pool Room and down the stairs on the east side of the room. Open the gate to the Lower Waterway in the next chamber, and make your way east.Climb out of the muck when you arrive at the platform on your right, and use the T shaped tool to unlock the gate to the Workroom Lift.

Ride the lift to the Workroom itself and you’ll find the Hip Pouches waiting for you on a table.

Nap Room Hip Pouch

Location: Nap Room as Claire after getting the level 2 identification chip

This next inventory upgrade can’t be found until after Claire and Sherry arrive at the Laboratory and get the second identification chip by heading through the Cafeteria and the Kitchen.

With your security clearance worked out, head through the security door to the south. In the chamber beyond, immediately look to your right to find a Signal Modulator on the ground beside a dead soldier.Take the Signal Modulator back to the Nap Room and approach the power panel on the far wall. Tune the Signal Modulator to the matching frequency and adjust the signal to match the lines, then use it on the panel to restore power to the Nap Room. The lights should flick on and wake up Dr. Li in the middle bunk. Deal with the doctor, and check the bed on the far left to claim the Nap Room Hip Pouch inventory upgrade as your prize.
