During Google’s keynote at its I/O Conference today the company announced its VR platform and headset, Daydream. The Daydream platform will be built on the upcoming Android N OS while the headset is a mobile VR headset that’s more likely to compete with Samsung Gear VR, than with HTC Vive or Oculus Rift. The headset will also come with a remote control/controller.
The headset is a step up from Google Cardboard and will only be compatible with Daydream-ready smart phones which will be hitting the market this fall. So far we should expect Daydream-ready phones from HTC, Samsung, LG, Huawei, Xiaomi, ZTE, ASUS, and Alcatel.
As far as apps and games on the platform, there will be VR versions of YouTube, Google Play Store, Street View, Google Photos, and Google Movies along with collaborations with Netflix, Ubisoft, and EA Games. Check out the announcement video:
