Every year The Game Awards is a place where we honor the greatest achievements in gaming every year. It’s also a place where we show off a bunch of new trailers and announcements for upcoming titles, the last major press conference of the year, so to speak. We are set to see announcement’s from some of the biggest surprise hits of the year, like Among Us, and Fall Guys, as well as old hits that seem eternal, like the announcement of the new Smash character. With 2021 being the first full year of the new console generation, and the year that many of the delayed games of this year finally hit store shelves, it’s set up to be one heck of a year in the gaming industry, and The Game Awards is just a taste of what’s to come. Let’s take a look.
Devolver Digital’s Game of the Year is the game of next year, Loop Hero
Yes! Yes! The true madness of Devolver Digital is here at The Game Awards! And they gave awards for their own 2021 games! They gave us quick looks at Shadow Warrior 3, Olija, Card Shark, Weird West, and Boomerang X, but they took specific time to show off Loop Hero, their latest property. Loop Hero sees a young RPG protagonist constantly cycling around a world that loops in on itself. It’s up to you to build the world around that loop, filling it with buildings and monsters and encounters to craft the hero’s journey and reveal more about this weird devastated world you are in. How do you do this? By building up a deck full of important objects encounters, much like Slay the Spire except your deck is the path you take. Your eventual goal? Break the never-ending cycle. Loop Hero will release in 2021.
What do you get when you cross Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, and Moana? You get this new open-world island-hopping adventure. On top of all the climbing and crafting and ukulele playing, this game’s main gimmick is the ability to possess the animals and plans of your island habitat and use their abilities to solve puzzles. No release date was given, but it certainly looks like a promising indie game.
Sea of Solitude: The Director’s Cut
Sea of Solitude is coming to the Switch and it’s not just a port. Apparently, the whole game is reworked with brand new content, content that reflects the difficult times of our modern age of isolation. It has a fully new script, new voices, a new photo mode, motion control support, and much much more. It will release next year on March 4 as a Switch exclusive.
Shady: Part of Me
Shadow-based puzzle platformers seem to be eternal. In this game, you play as a young girl whose only friend is her shadow. You’ll have to manipulate the real world in order to create paths for her shadow to traverse, sticking together in your platforming journey. You’ll use tricks of light to navigate different worlds, making her shadow grow and shrink, and even deleting whole portions of the shadow world by blocking off light sources. This new indie title is available right now on the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch.
The classic puzzle game is now available in VR on Oculus platforms. Yes, it’s all the puzzles and environments you remember from the PC classic, but now in fully polygonal 3D, that you can walk around in and experience for yourself! It’s available now on all Oculus devices.
NieR Replicant Ver. 1.22474487139
We got to see a full gameplay demo of this new version of the classic NieR, and it looks beautiful. High-resolution graphics, complex reworked character models, 60FPS framerate, and just a world just vomited on by magic bullets. This new reimagining of NieR will be available on April 23, 2021, for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
We Are OFK
We Are OFK is a brand new interactive series starting in spring 2021 that will follow a band and their rise to stardom. We got to listen to one of this band’s new tracks “Follow/Unfollow” during The Game Awards. It was a bop!
Century: Age of Ashes
You gotta love aerial dogfighters with dragons. This game would make Panzer Dragoon proud. With a huge campaign, multiplayer modes, and pretty fantastic graphics, this looks to be a worthy entrant to the genre. It will be available for purchase on PC via Steam and the Epic Game Store in February 2021.
And the new Super Smash Bros Ultimate character is… Sephiroth!
Bet you didn’t see that one coming! The second FF7 entrant comes with new FF7 music and stages, and also just a ton of range on his normals. He can attack edges of the stage and pull himself up with his sword, cast high-level spells like barrier and gravity. He can even slash his own stage, the platform in the middle of the lifestream, in half! He seems to have some sort of powerup where he goes full one-winged angel mode. Also… he straight-up murdered Mario in the trailer. It also seems like Cloud has a special version of Omnislash that executes versus Sephiroth, whose own final smash seems to be transforming into his FF7 boss mode. Sephiroth will be available for purchase before the end of the year.
The classic Goldeneye age shooter is being reimagined as “Eco Sci-Fi.” It posits a future where we have ruined the planet. Natural disasters, plagues, civil unrest, all cured by corporations who offered solutions. Hey…. Heeeey…. Wait a minute. This is just cyberpunk as envisioned by the guy who kept making tornados attack his city in Sim City 2000. Either way, it looks pretty cool, an interesting new take on post-apocalyptic futurism. Still, it’s great to see classic getting a new life.
Back 4 Blood
Of course, with a year of pandemic, the zombie genre was going to come back, and four player co-op zombie survival is just the way the genre goes ever since the days of Left 4 Dead. Back 4 Blood is a brand new co-op zombie survival game from the guys behind Left 4 Dead. It features new complex zombie types, including huge hulking behemoths that tower over the party like buildings. It’s a much bigger zombie co-op experience, modernized for the modern age. It’s a breath of fresh air in the zombie genre to see a return to this formula, fresh putrefied air.
It will be available for purchase on June 22, 2021, on Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS5, Ps4, and PC, but you can sign up for the closed alpha right now that kicks off on December 17.
The beta for this new battle royale game starts right now. It’s closed, but they are opening up 50,000 new slots for players at playscavengers.com
Hood: Outlaws and Legends
We got a brand new trailer for this dark take on Robin Hood, showing specifically how players can cooperate together to murder everyone around them and secure the riches of the nobility. Never really imagined Robin Hood would use a punch dagger to slit someone’s throat five times. Anyway, this will release in May with pre-orders getting to play early on May 7. It will hit PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC.
Forza Horizon 4 x Cyberpunk 2077
Cars! Every new generation comes with it a brand new driving experience, and this new driving experience is a crossover with Cyberpunk 2077. You can get the futuristic Quadra Turbo-R V-Tech from Cyberpunk in Forza for free on December 11.
The Calisto Protocol
A brand new sci-fi horror that seems to be taking cues from Dead Space is in production for 2022. It’s the work of Glen Schofield, known for his work on Dead Space. No gameplay was given nor were any platforms given but we can assume it will at the very least be available for next-generation consoles.
Warhammer 40,000 Darktide
We got a brand new gameplay video showing off the many guns, weapons, and four-player co-op gameplay of Warhammer Darktide. We also got a release platforms for PC and Xbox Series X, but we did not get an official release date.
This new story-driven experience by Annapurna starring Keri Russell and Kaitlyn Dever puts together polygonal graphics with hand-drawn animation in an interesting way. You and your mom take a road trip to figure out the secrets of your grandma’s life after her death, secrets that may lead to a burglary ring. Grandma must have been awesome! No platforms were given nor was a release date.
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut
More Disco Elysium? Yes, please! This brand new edition with new content comes with full voice acting for every single character and brand new quests! It will be made available as a free upgrade on PS5, PS4, and PC in March 2021. A physical collector’s edition is available for pre-order.
We got yet another cinematic look at the next Dragon Age installment, which during E3 this year we were told was going to focus more on society changes in response to one person’s actions than massive epic narratives. The game’s title… Dragon Age. Very original. No platforms or release dates were given.
How would you feel if I told you that a jazzy, noir-themed, isometric, rogue-lite was being made in the Endless universe? Death is only a temporary setback when your brain can be downloaded to a computer and re-uploaded into a clone. It will be available for the Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Switch, and PC, and is being produced by Sega. No release date was given.
Crimson Desert is looking to re-think the way that we play MMOs. Instead of every quest being a numbers game, it wants to give you deep and enthralling single-player content in an MMO setting. The goal is to make this as immersive as something like other big AAA titles like Horizon Zero Dawn but with the added connectivity of a persistent online world.
That means full voice acting, characters that you care about, and a whole lot of Game of Thrones-esque murder. Also, this is one of the fastest moving MMOs in the biz, featuring absurdly fast action-based combat rather than, once again, a flow chart based numbers game. It also seems to have full castle sieges, massive monster battles, and you can even ride on the back of a dragon which seems very in vogue these days. It will release for PC, Xbox One, and PS4 in Winter 2021.
Overcooked: All You Can Eat ft. Swedish Chef
I don’t…. I don’t really know how to explain this better than the title already does. It’s the famous Swedish Chef from The Muppets, in Overcooked and it’s available as a free download for Xbox Series X and PS5.
A brand new pack of Unreal Tournament themed skins and weapons are available now on the Epic store. It includes a Flak Cannon Skin & Drakgoon, a Rocket Launcher Skin ^ Ogris, and a Shock Rifle Skin ^ Stahlta.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War – Warzone
Wouldn’t be a Game Awards without a brand new Call of Duty trailer. We got a brand new look at Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Warzone’s first season with a brand new look at the new maps, weapons, and combat encounters you are in for. It’s probably the most cinematic content update for a Call of Duty game we have seen so far. It will be available on December 16.
As Geoff said, we are in lockdown right now, which means a lot of us can’t leave our houses. So this game will allow you to explore the many and varied cultures of the world on the PS5. Season will take you on a journey to uncover your heritage featuring open-world exploration and a fantastic cell-shaded style of animation. It’s a peaceful and meditative experience, which is what a lot of us need right now.
So uh… somebody put Vin Diesel in tribal makeup and had him fight Orcs. Cool… cool. Oh hey, then a T-Rex shows up. Did someone just convert one of Vin Diesel’s roleplaying games into a video game? I mean I guess I can’t actually criticize it too much. The tribal imagery is awkward but this definitely feels like one of those bizarre power-fantasies that Vin Diesel would be a part of. Hard to believe that this game started as a small indie title in origin and ended up with a sequel starring Vin Diesel.
Ark: The Animated Series
As an extra bonus for Ark fans, it looks like there’s going to be some sort of Ark animated series as well. It will launch in 2022 with an absolutely stellar cast.
Fall Guys Season 3
Fall Guys is turning into a winter wonderland, full of penguin costumes and snowball themed events. Snow is everywhere, and that probably means slippery physics. Other costumes include skiers, snowmen, elves, seals, polar bears, walruses, nutcrackers, and more. It’s a holly jolly time, to knock your opponents off the level into infinity. It goes public on December 15.
Ever wanted to explore the world of Elite: Dangerous on foot? Well, now you can with Odyssey. It’s a strangely isolated look at the universe, allowing you to wander through barren wastelands valuable only for their resources. Of course, when resources are involved competition is involved and that means shootouts and cramped corridors. This down close look at the universe will be available in early 2021 on PC, Xbox One, and PS4. You can pre-order on PC now.
We got a brand new look at this shooter from Square Enix, which pretty much detailed how it differs from other shooters. Cover is easily destructible and it’s better to run out into combat and use your powers. You have to kill people to heal, which means aggressive gameplay is favored. Basically, the more aggressive the better. You can pre-order Outriders right now in preparation for its February 2, 2021 release date.
I never thought I wanted to play a 2D combat focused game where I played an anthropomorphic rabbit with a cyber-arm, but this trailer made me want to. It will release in spring of 2021 for PS4, PS5, and Steam.
Evil Dead: The Game
It is really the time for four player co-operative zombie games to come back isn’t it? This one is set in the Evil Dead universe and is planned for release in 2021 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Ready your boomsticks everyone.
Ghosts ‘N Goblins Resurrection
Capcom surprised us all with a brand new entry in the Ghosts and Goblins franchise! It looks like Arthur can lose just his armored shirt before going completely naked this time. This reimagining of a classic platformer will be available on Nintendo Switch on February 25, 2021.
Capcom Arcade Stadium
Capcom is also releasing a brand new combo pack of their arcade favorites as a free download for Nintendo Switch in February 2021.
Microsoft Flight Simulator: Now on Xbox
This year’s best sim/strategy game was Microsoft Flight Simulator and now it’s not just for PC players. Xbox Owners will also be able to fly around the world, reminding themselves that there is something outside their room. It will come to the Xbox Series X/S next summer 2021.
Sony has another time-loop game for you, a sci-fi shooter/RPG/action game that sees you battling gigantic Lovecraftian monstrosities in an attempt to break the cycle. We first heard of this during the summer but we got a new release date, March 19 next year on PlayStation platforms.
Super Meat Boy Forever
Want more meat? Well we are getting more of this ultra-hard platformer on December 23 of this year.
Road trips also seem to be the aesthetic this year. It would make sense since we are all stuck inside. This one is a procedurally generated road trip that tasks you with escaping a country in turmoil. Reach the border and find your safety, but more people will be affected than just you. What will you do with the people you meet? What will you do about your dying homeland? You can wishlist this game now on Steam.
It Takes Two
This is a brand new game from Hazelight that is “co-op only” taking the brand new co-op trend to another level. Purchasing one copy will also give you another for a friend. But how does it play? Well, it seems like a bit of a gameplay mish-mash of all genres. There’s top-down dungeon crawling, platforming, snowboarding, Sonic style grinding, puzzle-solving, retro games, shooting, grappling hooks, rhythm games… it’s basically a trip through all genres through the lens of two people turned into clay dolls who have to fix their relationship to survive. It will release on March 26, 2021.
The Elder Scrolls Online
While we wait for the next proper Elder Scrolls to come out, you can still play The Elder Scrolls Online to hold you over. The next chapter of The Elder Scrolls Online, Gates of Oblivion will release next year, 2021.
Monster Hunter Rise
We got another look at this Switch exclusive Monster Hunter showing off brand new gameplay elements. One is The Rampage which features huge hordes of monsters attacking the player town. We also got to see massive village defenses such as cannons and catapults, along with plenty more of that vertical grappling hook gameplay. Monster Hunter Rise will release for Nintendo Switch on March 26, 2021. A demon will be available in January 2021.
It’s more zombies, but this time with high tech steampunk cowboys. Want to destroy some monsters with a shotgun punch dagger bracelet. This game has got you covered. It’s coming 2021 for the Xbox One, Xbox Series S, PS5, PS4, and PC.
One of the final trailers of the night was another look at Bandai Namco’s new action RPG, Scarlet Nexus a sort of sci-fi “brain punk” interpretation of the Tales series. We finally got to see a deeper look at characters in combat other than the main character including pyromancers, cryomancers, teleporters, and much more. It looks like you are going to be able to play this from two different points of view as you could in Tales of Xillia. It’s releasing for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PlayStation 5 next summer.
Among Us revealed a brand new map, sure to take the online world by storm. It’s the Toppat Airship from the Henry Stickmin Collection. It has a bunch of new tasks themed after the collection, with a bunch of new features like ladders, shortcuts, and the ability to choose different rooms to start in after meetings. There are also brand new Stickmin themed costumes and new kill animations as well. You can also get the brand new Geoff Keighley Mask on Twitch… weird. You can get the new map in early 2021.
A new season of Fortnite is coming and this one is themed after Halo with a brand new Master Chief skin. I guess that will hold you over while you wait for Halo: Infinite. He is available now as a skin. In addition to the Chief, there are also skins based on Red vs. Blue, and Blood Gulch seems to be coming to creative mode as well. You can even play capture the flag on it! Finally, Daryl and Michonne from The Walking Dead will also be joining as skins. Why not?
Ruined King: A League of Legends Story
The first single-player story in the League of Legends universe is looking quite good. You’ll get to take control of heroes like Braum and Miss Fortune in turn-based battles. The game itself is isometric and you appear to be able to attack people on the overworld. However, the combat itself is almost Grandia-esque, with abilities that alter turn order. It will be available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One in 2021.
We got to see just how absurd this new 4X game can go politically, socially, economically, and violently. It followed one gamers journey from the beginning of civilization to the age of space. It’s officially going to release on April 22, 2021, and if you pre-order now you can access a “Lucy Opendev” demo from December 15-28.
Nothing more than a cinematic trailer here assuring us that Mass Effect will continue. Andromeda didn’t kill it, so stay tuned for more.
That was quite a bit, three whole hours of announcements and awards. Which announcements are you most excited for. Let us know in the comments and watch the show below.
