February 9th, 2022 Nintendo Direct: Every exciting thing announced

Last Updated February 11th, 2022

Nintendo dropped a surprise direct on us recently, and it was HUGE! Tons of new strategy games, RPGs, remakes, big name titles, DLC, and more. Buckle up, because Nintendo just detailed its release plans for the next few months. Let’s take a look.

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes

Nintendo is continuing the latest Fire Emblem: Three Houses Saga with this new Warriors spinoff. Set in yet another plotline, we may finally get to see what would happen if all three houses worked together. It’s full of the same Warriors-style gameplay you love, big maps, huge battles, and lots of soldiers to cut down. It will release on June 24th.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp

The new Advance Wars remake is getting lots of new features, including full voice acting and new modes. It will release for the Switch on April 8th.

Mario Strikers: Battle League

Mario Strikers is back with a brand new game. The same four-on-four soccer experience returns but now you can play full eight-player versus mode, online! In addition, there is new gear that changes your character stats, items that provide boosts on the field, tackles, and special shots that tear up the field and can even earn you extra points. It will release for the Switch on June 10th.

Front Mission 1st Remake

A full remake of Front Mission, the classic giant robot strategy RPG, will be coming to the Switch this summer, complete with new graphics and full voice acting. A remake of Front Mission 2 is also coming at an unknown point in the future.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

A few new features were revealed for Kirby’s new post-apocalyptic adventure. First of all, he has a new “mouthful mode” where he inhaled inanimate objects and gains their properties, such as inhaling a car and getting the ability to drive around, or inhaling a glider and gaining the ability to fly. As for his standard copy abilities, he can now upgrade them into evolved forms, such as turning his standard fire breath into an arcing volcano or a dragon fire that allows him to fly. Finally, there is a town-building element that will allow him to rebuild the town of Waddle Dees as he rescues them.

Splatoon 3: Salmon Run Next Wave

Splatoon 3’s take on Salmon Run is getting a little bizarre. The Inklings are going to have to confront crazy new enemies with bizarre attacks, including a massive salmon kaiju that sends wave after wave of Salmonids at the players.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition

An HD Facelift for the controversial sequel to Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross is heading to Switch. It will have several “quality of life” improvements including battle adjustments and the ability to turn off encounters. It will also come with the full Radical Dreamers visual novel, the original SNES satelliview sequel that was eventually turned into this PS1 classic. It will launch on April 7th.

KLONOA Phantasy Reverie Series

HD Remakes of KLONOA: Door to Phantomile and Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil is coming to Nintendo Switch. The games will have all-new graphics while retaining their classic gameplay and will launch on July 8th.

Nintendo Switch Sports

Who would have thought we would be getting a sequel to Wii Sports? Well, it is one of Nintendo’s best-selling titles, despite just being a pack-in title with the Wii. Nintendo Switch Sports will once again allow you to play all your favorite sports mini-games with motion controls, waggling your hands at the screen wildly. It will include favorites like Tennis and Bowling along with brans new activities like Badminton and Volleyball. If you buy the physical version, you’ll even get a leg strap that will allow you to play Soccer by actually kicking your leg. Nintendo Switch Sports will be available on April 29th.

Triangle Strategy

The newest strategy RPG coming from the same studio that brought you Octopath Traveler is nearing its release. The full game will come out on March 4th, but before then, you can play an all-new demo that will take you through the first three chapters of the game, a very hefty portion of content. Your saved data will carry over from the demo to the final game, so if you enjoy tactics and medieval drama, be sure to download the demo today.

Disney Speedstorm

All your favorite Disney and Pixar characters are now the main roster in a kart racer! Disney Speedstorm will feature courses with grinding and flying elements, special powers for all its racers, full online play, and much more. Points off for not calling it Kingdom Karts though. It will launch this summer.

MLB The Show 22

For the first time ever MLB The Show is coming to Switch, and of course, this version will bring with it motion controls. However, you will also be able to play all of The Shows classic modes like Road to the Show, Diamond Dynasty, and Franchise mode. It will also feature fully cross-platform online play.

Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival

The latest Taiko no Tatsujin aka Taiko Drum Master game is coming to the switch, which means more songs including Nintendo classics like the Legend of Zelda theme and, believe it or not, Megalovania. It will also feature new modes including a new head-to-head mode in Great Drum Toy War and four-play co-op Don-Chan Band.  It will launch for Nintendo Switch later this year.

For my money, this is the biggest announcement from the direct. If you don’t know why LIVE A LIVE is such an amazing game, then all the more reason for you to play it. It brings you through several RPGs all with different systems, and different gameplay, in different time periods, as different characters face off against a timeless evil. This new remake comes with fully remade graphics, sound, and voice acting. Not only was this one of renowned composer Yoko Shimomura’s first and favorite titles to work on, it’s also one of the major inspirations for indie sprite RPGs that we know and love today, like Undertale… The boss music is called Megalomania… just note the similarities. LIVE A LIVE will launch on July 22nd and pre-orders open today.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3

But as much as I will sing the praises of LIVE A LIVE, this is the RPG that most people are excited for. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is a continuation of the stories of Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 2, taking place in a new merged world still peppered with the corpses of giant beasts. We don’t know much about the mechanics or systems, but we do know that the story looks amazing, and that it will release this September.

Everything Old is New

Several older titles will be coming to the Switch in compilation packs.

  • Portal: The Companion Collection will include Porta 1 and 2 and will launch later in 2022.
  • No Man’s Sky will come to the Switch this summer.
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed just released on the eShop.
  • Assassin’s Creed, the Ezio Collection will launch on Nintendo Switch February 17th.
  • SD Gundam Alliance Battle will be coming to Nintendo platforms sometime this year with full online play.
  • Cuphead’s new DLC pack The Delicious Last Course will be coming to Switch later this year.
  • Metroid Dread was updated with new hard and easy modes, and a new update in April will add a boss rush mode.
  • Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings are both available on Nintendo Switch Online… still no word on Mother 3.
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to see DLC support with a new Booster Course DLC pass that will release 48 new remastered courses in 6 waves.
  • Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece for Cloud is… a mouthful, but basically it means that every Kingdom Hearts game is now available for the Switch for cloud play only.
