Doom Eternal adds Horde Mode with new update

Last Updated October 27th, 2021

If you haven’t played DOOM Eternal in a while, a new update for the game may compel you to pick it up.

This week, Bethesda deployed update 6.66 which adds arcade-style Horde Mode, a Battlemode 2.0 experience, two new master levels, and more to the game.

According to Bethesda, this is how the Horde Mode plays out:

  • Start off with all perks, runes, and upgrades, and arm yourself with only a mastered Combat Shotgun.
  • Defeat waves of demons to unlock additional guns and fight through three challenge-packed levels.
  • Complete all encounters and puzzles to unlock more than 7 new skins, including the DOOM II Slayer and the Biker Slayer.
  • Compete against yourself and rival Slayers for the high score in seasonal leaderboards by playing at higher difficulty levels, completing bonus rounds, killing bounty demons, avoiding power weapons, and more.

Improvements to Battlemode include an all-new streak-based Ranking System with rewards and matchmaking, leaderboards, a new Arena: Stronghold, and the new Dread Knight playable demon. For those unfamiliar, Battlemode is the two demons vs. one DOOM Slayer multiplayer mode.

Two master levels, Mars Core and The World Spear, allow players to take on remixed demon encounters that introduce a new combat experience.

DOOM Eternal was released in March 2020 and is a follow-up to 2016’s DOOM reboot. The game takes place shortly after the events of the 2016 game and follows the DOOM Slayer as he once again tries to end Hell’s consumption of Earth and foil the alien Maykr’s plans to exterminate humanity.
